The act of washing our hands is one that occurs frequently in our daily lives. Nevertheless, many individuals are not aware of the correct technique for washing your hands to stop the spread of infections and diseases. Many people opt to only use water to wash their hands and without soap, which is harmful for the health of individuals. When hands are cleaned with water and soap, harmful organisms such as Salmonella and E. coli that can cause diarrhoea and pain are destroyed.
-Germs are able to survive for up to three hours on your hands.
-There are between 2 to 10 million bacteria on your fingertips.
-After you use the toilet, the number of germs on your finger tips doubles.
-Germs can be transferred to food and drink when hands are not washed.
The NHS advises that the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice (about 20 seconds) is the recommended length of time to wash your hands. Here is the correct way to wash your hands:
1. Apply water to your hands.
2. Apply enough soap to cover your hands.
3. Rub your hands together.
4. Rub the back of the opposite hand with one hand while cleaning in between the fingers. Use the other hand to replicate this.
6. Rub the back of your fingers against your palms
7. Rub your thumb using your other hand. Do the same with the other thumb.
8. Rub the tips of your fingers on the palm of your other hand. Do the same with other hand.
9. Rinse your hands with water.
10. Dry your hands completely with a disposable towel.
11. To turn off the tap, use the paper towel.
